The Good Thing About Starting Again…
The good thing about starting again is that we can do it as many times as we need to.
For years, I clung desperately to this statement. It brought me comfort to know that no many how many acts of wanton self-destruction I engaged in, there was always an opportunity to reboot and redeem myself.
Every time I f’d up (and believe me, I f’d up a lot), I took solace in the fact that it wasn’t too late. I always had another shot.
Sure, any external damage I’d caused (such as to relationships) may or may not have been irreversible, but any damage I’d done to myself could usually be sorted out.
The evidence was there to prove it.
Rebooting from Rock Bottom
There was a time in my life when self-medicating with alcohol cost me my wife, my home, my job and my dignity but, eventually, I was able to stop, sober up, and start again, building a new life for myself that was better than anything I’d experienced before.
I can think back to a time when my mental health plummetted to such depths that I spent weeks in a darkened room with the curtains drawn, barely moving from the sofa and wondering if today was the day that I eventually ended it all.
