It’s been hours, days since your last cigarette. The nicotine has all but gone out of your system. So too has that initial wave of enthusiasm for your quit. All that’s left now is that uneasy feeling, lurking beneath the skin, scratching at your veins, making your chest heavy and your fingers desperate to grab, squeeze, BREAK something. You’re in the thick of it now. You’re deep in the heart of your quit. The tension builds, gnaws, claws away. Somewhere within, there’s a deep, guttural scream waiting to get out.

This too shall pass. This too shall pass.

You repeat that old, familiar mantra over and over, prepared to ride this wave to the bitter end if it means emerging smoke-free and happy.

Besides, how bad can it get?

You’re about to find out.

You arrive at work to be greeted by a flood of emails, all marked URGENT. You’d deal with them if it wasn’t for the phone ringing and the loud chatter of the office gossips slowly driving you mad. You want to go outside, to shout, to yell, to tell them to SHUT UP!

But you don’t.

You can’t, because there’s the boss, demanding that you get that report over to him ASAP.
